It is particularly difficult when the symptoms show up on the job. People with OCD need to know about legal protections under the law, what and when to disclose about their condition, what accommodations may be requested and how to protect your rights. The following information is offered as guidance, not legal advice. The Americans With Disabilities Act The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that was designed to protect those with disabilities from discrimination. The ADA protects employees with physical or mental disabilities who are able to perform their job with reasonable accommodations. Private and religious employers with 15 or more employees and all public sector employers fall under this federal mandate. The ADA does not specifically identify medical conditions that are covered under the law. The law defines a disability as “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities” under the ADA Amendments Acts. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has included OCD in its regulations as a condition that substantially limits brain function. Therefore the EEOC suggests that OCD should qualify as a disability. Your employer may ask for documentation from your mental health provider to substantiate your disability. Larger companies usually have policies and procedures outlining how the employer addresses requests for accommodations. If so, it would be helpful to be aware of these before disclosing your OCD as a disability. Reasonable Accommodations It is important to understand that requests for accommodations need to be considered reasonable. According to JAN, this means “any modification or adjustment to a job or the work environment that will enable a qualified applicant or employee with a disability to participate in the application process or to perform essential job functions. Reasonable accommodation also includes adjustments to ensure that a qualified individual with a disability has rights and privileges in employment equal to those of employees without disabilities.” The EEOC states that employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations unless doing so would cause ‘undue hardship’ to the employer. When Accommodations Are Unreasonable Undue hardship is explained as accommodations that would be cost-prohibitive or too difficult given the size or structure of the business. To Disclose or Not to Disclose â€" That is the Question There are risks and benefits to disclosing your mental health condition on the job. If the symptoms interfere with your ability to do your work, you may have to disclose to protect your job. It is wise to do some homework before you disclose. Determine if your employer is covered under the ADASecure documentation of your diagnosis from your medical or mental health provider.Be aware of the possible backlash of disclosure (stigma, judgment, co-worker resentment).Check with your HR Department about policies related to accommodations for disabilities.Decide on what specific reasonable accommodations you need to perform your job better.Think about how much information you want to disclose; develop a brief script with few details about your disability and requested accommodations to share with your supervisor or HR representative. You may want to contact the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) before you talk to your employer. They can advise you about what and how to disclose, and what types of accommodations are usually offered based on your specific needs. You can print information from their website about accommodating mental disabilities to provide to your employer when you disclose. Doing so lets them know that you are aware of your rights and provides them with a resource for determining what accommodations may be reasonable in your situation. JAN consults with employers and employees to work out reasonable accommodations upon request. The services are free of charge as JAN is a part of the US Department of Labor. Discrimination If you believe you have been discriminated against, you may file a claim at the EEOC office nearest you. In some cases, you have only 180 days to file. The claim will be investigated, which can take a long time. People who file claims are also protected legally from retaliation for making a claim. While it is difficult to prove retaliation, it happens. Document any concerns and report these to the EEOC.

Human resource development cultural program consists of a set of experi ences and ideas as well as methods that the military should be exposed to in order to have efficacy in their day-to-day operations and during war. The program is structured in a way that it realizes its objectives within a given time frame. Studies in culture of the military field have shown several practices and principles. These include: use of limited force during war, effects of institutional growth in military units, impact on doctrine, impediments to military innovation, implications for development of leaders, ramifications of insubordination, effect on learning abilities of military organization and the source of disagreements with provincial reconstruction teams (Legro, 1995). Despite the extensive literature on military culture, the application of the term has always been underutilized and is yet to attain its potential in promoting positive attitude and improving learning abilities. The program targets all individuals in the military and is structured in a way that differ ent cadres in the military have varying learning objectives. In the event of execution, the program uses a variety of methods to ensure that learning is made easy and interactive. Objectives that are used in the sub-sections the contents are specific, measurable, achievable, and realistic and time bound. The program endeavors to change most of the aspects of the military culture so that full potential of the military can be realized.Human resource development program has several objectives: firstly, it provides new employee orientation. Human resource development programs ensure that new employees get the tools and information they need to be successful on the job. This includes presentations on company history and its strategic objectives, organizational structure and job-specific policies and procedures. By providing instruction on how to complete operational tasks such as sending email, setting up and attending meetings or submitting status reports, this overview information all ows new employees to minimize the time it takes to function effectively. Turning to culture, the new employee orientation ensures that the military personnel properly and efficiently use the communication systems and the new technology. Military has had a culture of stagnation and conservativeness thus introducing new methods and techniques of performing duties is greatly recommended.Secondly, human resource development helps employees to progress in their careers. Career development programs help ensure employee retention, saving the company the money it costs to recruit, interview, hire and train new staff. By providing opportunities for employees to register for courses, obtain reference and resource material, access online training and get the coaching and mentoring they need to advance in their careers, human resource development organizations help employees improve their skills and knowledge. By clearly defining job descriptions and associated competencies, Human resource prof essionals let employees know what they need to work on in order to get a promotion, secure a new role or advance into management. By encouraging employees to align their development objectives with the companys strategic goals, human resource professionals ensure that all development supports the companys mission. In the military environment where the best is required for the sake of winning wars and employing the best tactics, human resource development should be a regular practice. This is important more so when it comes to the changing of military culture. Lastly, human resource development serves the purpose of identifying performance gaps. Human resource development professionals help managers develop long-range plans. By assessing the skills of existing staff, these professionals help identify performance gaps and design programs to mitigate those issues. For example, if the company seeks to decrease product defects, increase customer satisfaction and eliminate waste, but emp loyees lack skills in process improvement, Human resource development professionals need to purchase or develop programs that develop skills in quality management. By enabling employees to get certified as Six Sigma professionals, human resource development teams contribute to the companys growth and sustainability. They also implement initiatives, such as diversity training and coaching or mentoring programs, to ensure that employees share their knowledge and experience to function effectively as a team (Craig, 1996). Human resource development stresses on continually improving the competencies and motivating, effectiveness and dynamism and of its employees; developing problem solving skills and positive attitudes; upgrading collective and individual experience, perceptions and knowledge; and improving their competitive skills. These and related activities fine-tune workers to integrate and align their personal goals with company goals.Lastly, military staffs that undergo the process of human resource development usually depict increased involvement and communication. Juani Swart et al. (2005), asserts that human resource development improves employee involvement and intra-organizational communication. Human resource development practices focus on continually improving the culture of organizations and measuring, improving involvement, enhancing teamwork and participation activities. The military can be trained using different methods and techniques depending on the nature of the training and the resources available. These methods may include:Simulators. These are used to copy real work experiences. Many of the simulators are quiet expensive but are indispensable for jobs like learning to fly a 747 airplane. The training of astronauts also involves a wide use of simulators to copy the c hallenges and gravitational changes experienced on a space tour. Similarly the military can also use video games, especially those that train people on driving and shooting for training of soldiers. On-The-Job Training. Sometimes training experts recommend that one train through undergoing the actual experience or meeting the real challenge. Some of the examples of on-the-job training include reading a manual which is quite boring, but intense way of acquiring knowledge about a task. On-the-job training involves a combination of observation, explanation and practice. Some parts of the military training is always done as apprenticeship where they train by doing the actual activity. These may include understanding some instructions during the war or how to understand the techniques used by an enemy.Coaching/Mentoring. This provides the employees with an opportunity to get training one-on-one from professional. Caching/mentoring method is normally done after the employees have been t aken through a more formal process aimed at expanding their knowledge. In the military environment coaching is appropriate and effective when there is a formal coaching program between officials at a higher rank and their immediate juniors. Coaching/mentoring provides trainees with an opportunity to ask questions and receive detailed and straight forward answers - something they may not receive in a learning environment with a large group of learners. Lectures. This method of human resource development is usually done in a classroom-format. The main advantage of lecture method is that large chunks of information can be disseminated to a lot of people within a short period of time. It has been said to be the least effective of all training methods. Propaganda is everywhere any human looks. It is the base of almost every government. But, seeing as how other governments are worse than the American government, it’s worse in other areas of the world. The role of propaganda in a totalitarian government is very important, especially when compared to a democratic type of government, mostly because democracies don’t usually want to control every aspect of life. Information or ideas that are spread by an organized group or government to influence peoples opinions, especially by not giving all the facts or by secretly emphasizing only one way of looking at the facts is what propaganda is (â€Å"Cambridge Dictionaries†). Hitler told his men to just not tell the German people the truth at all. He just wanted them to know what they needed to know and leave out all of the rest. Democratic countries, however, are completely opposite. Democratic countries must present at least some of the truth in their propaganda. Any free person will eventually discover the truth, so democratic countries don’t really think too much of their propaganda. When propaganda has been uncovered, and the people discover that it is distorted or full of lies, it becomes ineffective (â€Å"Democratic vs. Enemy Propaganda† para. 5). The people completely understood democracy. The people used to act together, almost as if they were like an assembly line. The people used to be in charge of the legitimate authority, and political power. Nowadays, the only thing the people control is limited. They have the right to pick and choose who is of the political authority. However, people have the right to know all of the truth of any situation, so democratic propaganda has to abide by that rule, no matter how ugly the truth may be. Conflict Resolution Although many of us go great lengths to avoid it, sometimes it is just inevitable. People in the workplace setting will always have different ideas, values, and attitudes than others around them. A conflict can arouse in any given setting, and the affect it can have on those involved can either be negative or positive. Depending on the approach and strategies utilized during and after a conflict will determine the result of the conflict. Conflict helps people recognize legitimate differences within an organization or profession and serves as a powerful motivator to improve performance and effectiveness, as well as satisfaction (CCN, 2017). Once the nurse from my unit went in to assess the patient she observed that the patient had a severely infiltrated IV, leaving her arm swollen beyond belief. Her vitals als o revealed that she was hypotensive, febrile and in respiratory distress unstable and rapidly becoming septic. Thankfully interventions were taken just in time and the patient ended up being transferred to the ICU where she received the care needed to save her life. A competitive market or perfect competitive market is a market that has many buyers and sellers that do not influence prices. An example of a competitive market would be the street vendors selling bottled water along the sidewalk of a tourist attracted city. There are likely to be many vendors and buyers alike. Most notably the influence of each vendors input on price is low. The opposite of a competitive market is a monopoly. Monopolies affect the economy with considerable control over supply and price. The definition of monopoly is when the single seller of a product controls its market and does not allow competition. Local telephone, cable, and water, which are a natural monopoly, are examples of monopolies. Each of the companies has complete control for the distribution of their products or services in regards to supply and prices. Oligopolies are types of imperfect competition in the market structure. An oligopoly is where only a few sellers offer similar or identical products. Consider watching a basketball game at any level of competition. The athletic wear, footwear, and accessories worn by players are more than likely Nike, Addidas, or Reebok. These companies sell products that are similar and are for the same purpose, yet they are not identical. This type of market structure is also known as monopolistic competition. Oligopolies have considerable control over some of the prices of the products they sell. The characteristic of each market structure are important to understand the role of each structure. The determination of price in terms of maximizing profits is best understood by following the rules of production in a given market. Profit maximizing for a company or firm is utilized by using the company’s profit maximizing output level. This is when the marginal cost is the same as the product price. When a company offers products in new locations the marginal cost of the products of the new locations is a part of the marginal cost. That would be an example of a company opting to profit maximizes their production ased on change of total cost to accomplish more profit. Another consideration of a profit maximizing rule is when marginal cost equals price. A company attempting to profit will manage this rule closely to determine profitability. The average total cost of a good is the deciding factor in profit maximizing where marginal cost equals price and marginal cost increases. Monopolist market companies maximize profits by following the rule marginal revenue equals marginal cost. Marginal revenue is the change in total revenue that results from a change in output. Companies that are the single producer of a product will want to maximize their total revenue. Costs of production are low therefore marginal revenue will equal cost. Competitive markets, monopolies, and oligopolies have profit maximizing rules that compare price to marginal revenue, marginal cost, and average total cost to determine profit gain. Each market consists of barriers of entry. One of the reasons for entry is the encouragement of successful gain of profits from other companies. Consider the local and national fast food hamburger restaurants. McDonalds began as one of the first restaurants of its type followed by chains such as Wendy’s and Burger King. That is an example of monopolist competition at its best. A discouragement or barrier for entry into certain market structures is through law and regulations. Creating anti-trust laws are detrimental to the formation of monopolies and their continued growth. There are three examples of business practices that present a dilemma for business entry. Resale price maintenance is the setting of a product price is contracted by the wholesaler for the retailer to sell at that given price. If the price is set from the wholesaler competition is suspended because of the price being uncontrolled by the retailer. The next business practice involves market power. A company that possesses market power has control of setting and changing prices without losing customers or altering the entire market. These companies are also referred to as price setters. â€Å"Firms with market power normally use that power to raise prices above the competition level. † (Mankiw) Predatory pricing is a debatable topic in terms of entry into a market and regulated policies. The third type of a business entry barrier is tying. Tying forces smaller businesses to strategize products based on the market power and price discrimination practices of manufacturers. There are four other barrier entry provisions for various markets. First, there is the denial of entry into a market or the lack of possible competition. Next, a company may own a key resource that provides exclusive rights to that market. Another point is when the government allows a single seller the right to produce or provide certain goods. Finally, the cost of production equals a single producer being more efficient versus the cost of production via a large number of producers. The characteristics, price determinations, and barriers of entry into competitive markets play essential roles in the economy. The characteristic of each market provides buyers and sellers to understand and make business decisions for the success of the economy.
